While in Seattle on our North American road trip, we stopped in at the must see Chihuly Garden and Glass. Housed beside the Seattle Space Needle in a semi-permanent exhibit located at the Seattle Centre the exhibit showcases of the work of famed glass artist Dale Chihuly. This collection of blown and sculpted glass artwork is simply amazing. The pictures on this page simply do not do this exhibit justice, the vibrant colours, the skill, and imagination involved. Very humbling.

Oregon coast: Cape Kiwanda – Pacific City

A tip from a friendly Airbnb host on our recent North America road trip resulted in us paying a visit to Cape Kiwanda beach at Pacific City, Oregon.

This little beach is a popular spot for launching flat bottom “Dory” fishing boats from the beach. It is quite the spectacle to watch the boats power toward the beach and drive up onto the sand. Seen in the background is Cheif Kiawanda rock, one of three along the Oregan coast, known as “Haystack rocks”.

Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area is natural beauty that should not be missed on any trip along the Oregon coast.

Bixby Creek Bridge – Big Sur – California

Roughly 215km south of San Francisco is this little gem of a bridge on Highway 1, the Bixby Creek Bridge. As its name suggests, this bridge allows Highway 1 to cross Bixby Creek along the beautiful Big Sur coastline region of California. Built in 1932, the bridge itself is fairly typical of many other concrete arch bridges scattered along the west coast. What makes this bridge stand out from the rest is its stunning location. With rolling mountains on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other, the bridge is quite popular with tourists looking to stretch their legs and take a quick snapshot of the scenery. It doesn’t matter how many times I visit the Monterey area, I always make a point of stopping here to take in the view.

Natural Bridge – Springbrook national park

Natural Bridge - Springbrook National Park

Natural Bridge

Springbrook National Park

A basalt rock formation where cave creek drops through a hole in the cave roof into a pool below, the cave is home to glow worms and a microbat colony. Access to the cave is via an easy, scenic walk from the car park along a paved track loop that passes through stunning rainforest and along cave creek. The walking track carpark is on Bakers Road, off Nerang Murwillumbah Road, Beechmont.

Due to a series of unfortunate injuries the pool and the creek bank is off limits to walking and swimming, which thankfully makes it more enjoyable, and will ensure it remains in its current condition for generations to come.

Golden Path - Golden Hour - Uralla NSW
Golden Path, Uralla NSW

Golden hour is one of my favourite times of day to shoot landscape photos. This lovely scene presented itself one very early morning on our recent trip to the New England region of New South Wales. It was literally a 90-degree turn from my Gostwyck Chapel Photo, roughly 10km from the town of Uralla, this short bridge leads from the road past the chapel to the Deeargee Woolshed, another historic building that one day I hope to photograph from the inside. This gold light and the low, early morning fog give this shot a dreamy look. Please keep an eye out for more pictures from this area.

Up early to drive from Brisbane to the Gold Coast, trying to catch a sunrise at the Southport pumping jetty. The sand pumping jetty stretches 800m out into the Pacific Ocean where it intercepts the northward-moving longshore drift. The sand bypasses past the Southport Seaway, maintaining the shipping lane entry into the Southport Broadwater.

While the sunrise itself wasn’t exactly spectacular, the clouds looking west weren’t bad, so I took the opportunity to put up the drone to catch a couple of shots.

Photo of the week – Mt Tibrogargan – Glasshouse Mountains

Went searching for a sunset with some friends and found our way to the Glasshouse mountains lookout at Beerburrum, unfortunately due to trees surrounding the lookout and lack of interest in the sky, there wasn’t much of a sunset to be had.

Mt Tibrogargan, the third tallest mountain in the Glasshouse Mountains national park in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. A rhyolite volcanic plug formed 27 million years ago, it is one of the most recognised of the glasshouse mountains.

Lightroom flagging

lightroom pick and reject flags

Pick and Reject in lightroom to sort your keepers.

We all know the story, out for a morning shooting and all of a sudden when you get home you have several hundred photos to sort and edit. Of course editing them all would be a massive waste of time. Heres a really quick way to sort your keepers and your rejects.

Lightroom has many ways to organise your catalogue, star ratings, colour labels, and they way we are going to focus on today, flags.

Flagging is my first course of action when Ive been a little too shutter happy and need to reduce my workload, flagging is as simple as using your keyboard to pick ‘P’ or reject ‘X’ each image. To make things move along a little faster, you can also set the auto advance function, found in the photo menu in the library module, so that as you pick or reject the library will automatically advance to the next image in the catalogue.

Auto advance in the photo menu of the library module
Auto advance in the photo menu of the library module

When flagging photos I usually make 2 passes through, 1st pass rejects poor exposed, out of focus, or just plain poorly composed shots and is usually quite fast, 2nd pass goes a little slower, as I look a little more critically at each image, this allows me to compare similar images to pick the better shot.

Once you have gone through the images you can either filter the images so you only see the “Keep” images, or you can “Delete Rejected Photos…” Either from the photo menu, or via keyboard shortcut Control + Delete (pc) or Command + Delete (mac)

filters
Select Flagged from the filters drop down to show only your keepers.

Quick tip: Comparing 2 images in lightroom

If your stuck between 2 (or more) images as to which one you will keep or reject, use the compare or survey view in lightroom to more closely inspect your images. Both views will allow you to compare any images that have been multiple selected using the control key (pc) or command key (mac). With the survey view showing all images at once, and the compare view showing 2 images at a time, with the right hand image able to be cycled through the selected images with the arrow keys.

All aboard! Steam engines at the Dorrigo steam railway and museum

This gem of a place is actually a very large private collection of steam, electric, and diesel engines and rolling stock. We had spotted the property from a road leading to a local waterfall and decided to go investigate. Lucky for us we were spotted by a gentleman who was kind enough to open the gate for us for a look around. Although the museum dates back to 1973, it is currently”not yet open to the public”

Gostwyck Chapel – Uralla

Gostwyck Chapel

Gostwyck Chapel – Uralla

Gostwyck Chapel, 10km from Uralla, New England region, New South Wales - Ian Schulz Photography
Stunning Gostwyck Chapel, Uralla, New South Wales

Took a little detour off the highway in New South Wales New England region to find this little gem. Located 10 km from Uralla, Gostwyck Chapel was built in 1921. The chapel sits on private property, thankfully, the property owners have left it unfenced for the enjoyment of visitors. Behind the church, an elm tree lined avenue leads to Gostwyck station, while a magnificent sight, visitors are asked not to venture up the avenue to respect the privacy of the station and it’s owners. I’ve been here a few times and it’s definitely a popular spot for photographers. During the Autumn months, the elm trees turn yellow and the Virginia creeper that covers the chapel turns red.

The sign at the front of the church reads:

“This chapel was dedicated in memory of Major Clive Collingwood Dangar, M.C., who died in World War 1. He was the youngest grandson of Henry Dangar, 1796-1861, who emigrated to the colony as a free settler in the Jessie 1821. Henry was appointed assistant surveyor to John Oxley. He and his brother William, 1800-1868, purchased Gostwyck in 1834.”

The famous little church perched on the shores of New Zealand’s Lake Tekapo. Snow-capped mountains of the southern Alps peeking up over the horizon. We waited what seemed like hours for the tourist buses and other photographers to leave so we could get a shot of the colourful skies over this little beauty.
